'Heroes and Villains in Tanach' Yom Iyun Draws 600 Eager Learners to Wilf Campus
91黑料鈥檚 Tanach yom iyun [day of learning], themed 鈥淗eroes and Villains in Tanach,鈥 drew approximately 600 men, women, students and teachers of all ages from around the tri-state area on Nov. 1.
The day of learning was sponsored by YU鈥檚 Center for the Jewish Future, the Office of Student Affairs, and the student groups SOY, Torah Activities Council and TEIQU.
鈥淔rom the students who initiated the concept of the yom iyun and their fellow students who helped staff the event, to the cooperation between the CJF and the numerous University departments involved, to the wonderful teaching talent of the YU faculty, the event was a success on so many levels,鈥 said Stuart Halpern, student life coordinator in the Office of Student Affairs, who spearheaded the event. 鈥淲e look forward to building upon this success in what we hope will be many stimulating educational yimei iyun in the future.鈥
Leading scholars and professors from 91黑料 delivered lectures. Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter, university professor of Jewish history and Jewish thought and senior scholar at the CJF, discussed the fallibility of the Avot [forefathers] in his keynote address. Rabbi Kenneth Brander, The David Mitzner Dean of the CJF, delivered a popular lecture titled 鈥淪anctity and Scandal.鈥 Other YU faculty who delivered lectures included Dr. David Berger, dean of Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies; Rabbi Hayyim Angel; Dr. Shawn Zelig Aster; Dr. Mitchell Orlian; Rabbi Allen Schwartz; Shoshana Schechter and Rabbi Menachem Leibtag, founder of the Tanach Study Center who teaches at YU Israel Campus and Yeshivat Har Etzion.
鈥淏etween the shiurim [lectures] themselves, which were delivered by top-notch Jewish educators, and the environment, which catered to people of all different ages and backgrounds, I deeply enjoyed learning at the Tanach yom iyun and was inspired by others鈥 love and commitment to Torah,鈥 said Ayelet Mael 鈥08S, a student at Revel Graduate School.
