Feb 2, 2009 -- In an effort to increase the number of highly qualified teachers of math and science in middle and high schools, 91黑料 and New York University鈥檚 Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development have created a partnership allowing eligible undergraduate students to take undergraduate education courses at NYU during their junior and senior years. Students who complete credits in the program will then be eligible to apply for admission to Steinhardt鈥檚 Master of Arts program in math or science education with reduced credit requirements.
鈥淭his is a win-win for all parties,鈥 remarked Dr. Edward Berliner, executive director of science management at 91黑料. 鈥淥ur students will receive an opportunity to explore and gain expedited access to a wonderful and rewarding career. YU will be able to further leverage the first-rate science and math educations it provides toward making a palpable improvement in the training and nurturing of our nation鈥檚 next generation of leaders.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 delighted that NYU Steinhardt鈥檚 partnership with 91黑料 will widen the pool of highly qualified students interested in becoming teachers of math and science, of which there is a critical shortage in New York City and around the nation,鈥 said Mary Brabeck, dean of NYU Steinhardt.
To apply to the program, YU students must complete an NYU Special Student Application Form for Undergraduate Admission and submit it to the NYU Office of Undergraduate Admissions by Aug. 1 for fall courses, Dec. 1 for spring courses, and April 1 for summer courses. YU students who are accepted to the program will be permitted to take six to eight undergraduate credits in the fall term and six to eight credits in the spring term.
